Cosmetics are part of our everyday life – there’s no getting around it. Even if you’re a minimal makeup user, you’re probably applying something – from moisturizer to nail polish – to keep yourself looking in tip top shape. But how good are you about rotating older cosmetics out of the loop and staying on top of the expiration dates of….say….a bottle of lotion? Probably not your top priority, right? Well, turns out there’s more nasty bacteria in our cosmetics than we’ll ever care to know – but if you stay on top of keeping them clean and on rotation you should be good to go.
Care for Your Cosmetics Created By: Fat Wallet
Did you know?
- Makeup is crawling with toxic, potentially fatal bacteria
- 97% of people use products way past their shelf lives
- Your face isn’t the only thing at risk – eye infections, skin infections, bacteria can build up and even spread through your bloodstream
Don’t store makeup in your bathroom: bacteria thrive in humidity. Store makeup in a cool, dry place.
- In the bathroom: Perfume, nail polish, makeup remover
- Out of the bathroom: Foundation, lipstick, eyeliner, mascara, blush, brushes
Each Product has its own set of rules:
- Foundation: Use a brush or makeup sponge to apply and be sure to keep it out of the sun. When it starts to go on unevenly – it’s time to toss it.
- Lipstick: Shelf life is 2 years and when it’s hot – store it in the fridge. When it starts to dry out and no longer looks creamy on the lips – it’s time to toss it.
- Mascara: Shelf life is 2-3 months. When it turns chalky and powdery, and fibers separate from the fluid – time to toss it.
- Eyeliner: Use alcohol on a small cotton pad to clean eyeliner pencils and never share with a friend.
- Nail Polish: Shelf life is 1-2 years…when it turns gooey or stringy, time to toss it.
- Eyeshadow & Blush: Shelf Life is 2 years. Keep it on rotation when it starts to get super packed down, it’s time to toss it.
