Maintaining a fresh and vibrant hair color can be a challenging task, particularly during months when the weather seems to be intent on drying out your tresses. Dry hair means lackluster color, frizz, and fly-aways. I recently touched up my hair color in preparation for the holiday season ahead, so I thought I’d share some tips on how to maintain your hair color looking fresh and fab for longer. Here are some tips to keep your hair color looking its best so you can focus on the things that really matter this season. xo
How to Maintain Your Hair Color
1. Protect your hair – Prolonged exposure to the elements can easily make your color fade. If you know you’re going to be outdoors for a long time, try using a leave-in spray or conditioner with UV protector. Or, you can always opt for a chic hat.
2. Wash less often – Washing your hair too frequently can easily dry it out and fade your color. Try using dry shampoo in between washes to make your style last longer. Washing every 3 days should be a good rule of thumb. Go longer if your hair can stand it.
3. Use sulfate-free shampoo – Using a gentler formula that’s specific for colored and treated hair will make the process last longer between touch-ups. Try sulfate-free shampoo for a healthier option.
4. Try color-protector conditioner – After you shampoo, apply a conditioner that’s meant to protect your locks of color. Apply only to the ends and rinse with a blast of cold water to fuse the hair shaft closed, which will protect color from washing out.
5. Avoid chlorine – If you swim often or spend a lot of time in chlorinated water, it can severely damage your hair and its treatments. Try to avoid wetting it by wearing it up and donning a swim cap. Also, applying that same protecting conditioner when you swim can help ward off some of the damaging effects.
6. Use a hair mask – A deep conditioning hair mask can help keep your hair looking healthy and shiny after a color treatment. Once or twice a week should be more than plenty, depending on whether you have oily or dry hair.
