How to Stop Loving Someone Who Doesn’t Deserve Your Love

Love is one of the most beautiful gifts in the world, but it can feel like a curse when you possess devotion for someone who doesn’t deserve it. Did you know that studies have shown that rejection from love activates the same pain-sensing neurons in your brain that physical pain does? Some scientists even go on to say unrequited love can trigger the same reaction in your brain as drug addiction withdrawal. In a perfect world, we’d have a switch to turn off feelings for the wrong people. You are not alone in this experience; 98% of people have experienced some form of unreturned love. You can’t control how you feel, but you can work through your emotions, release your mind and soul, and move on to become a stronger, happier you. Here’s how to stop loving someone who can’t love you the way you deserve them to.

#1. Take time out.

Separation is probably the hardest step to take, but once you’ve made your decision, you have to take time out. You need to give yourself space and time to heal. Hide their posts on social media. Constant reminders will make your healing process more difficult.

#2. Meditate.

It’s OK if you have no idea what this meditation movement is all about. Everyone has to start somewhere. Meditation is a great way to work through emotions, cleanse your soul and fill your heart with peace. Rub your hands together for 30 seconds. Put your right hand over your heart, covered with your left hand. Feel the energy flow into your heart as you visualize it being filled with love, light, happiness, and positivity.

#3. Focus on you.

It sounds like a cliche, but focusing on yourself and what you enjoy is the best remedy for heartache. Fill your weekends and spare time with activities that make you happy. Work towards your goals every day. Make yourself the center of your universe.

#4. Understand the situation.

For whatever reason, the person you love cannot love you the way you deserve to be loved. Battling to win their love and attention will eat away at your self-esteem and soul. Focus your energy on what you can control. You cannot command your emotions, but you can regulate how you react to them.

#5. Maintain a positive environment.

Stick to positive music playlists, funny movies, and spend time with friends who always make you laugh. When your mind wanders back to ‘what if?’ mode, remind yourself of all the person’s negative characteristics that drove you to decide it’s time to let go.

#6. Clear your space.

The box of memories you keep to remember your story together isn’t going to help your healing journey. As you look at each memento, recall the memory, put it in a box attached to a balloon, and visualize it floating away.

#7. Avoid negative behaviors.

Though socializing again is an essential part of the process, it’s crucial to remember that alcohol is a depressant. Excessive drinking can lead to destructive behaviors, drama; text messages you wish you’d never sent. Focus your time on fun activities that make you smile without alcohol.
