It’s something we all want. Sounds so simple and like it should be easy to achieve, but for whatever reason getting your lipstick to stay all day is a huge challenge. No matter what you’ve got going on: a long day at the office, a long night out with your girlfriends, a day date with a new love interest….you want your lip color to have lasting staying power so you can keep looking your best for hours. Turns out there are a few tricks of the trade – just the ones you need to get those long-lasting effects you’re after. Curious how to get this done? Here are five ideas to get your lipstick to last all day.
How to Make Your Lipstick Last All Day
Don’t doubt the power of exfoliation and a fresh lip. When your lips are soft and smooth, the color goes on better, looks great and lasts longer rather than getting flaky partway through a wear. Keeping your lips plump and hydrated starts from the inside out by drinking lots of water and using a lip scrub to slough off dead skin. Exfoliation can be done two to three times a week for the best results and be sure to follow with a moisturizing lip balm.
Use foundation. This may sound crazy – foundation is for the face! But, here’s the thing: when you use foundation on your face it helps to create a smooth canvas and makes makeup last for hours – so why wouldn’t the same rules apply to lips? You can get the same effects with a lip primer – simply apply a light coat of either primer or foundation and let it dry. Add your lipstick after that. You’ll be amazed at just how long it stays put.
Don’t forget the lip pencil. So many of us skip this step, merely applying lip color directly to the lips without any sort of liner. But, the beauty of a lip pencil is that it’s crucial for keeping your color in place and on your lips – exactly where you want it. You can use a natural color lip pencil – something very close to your natural lip color to line the lips. After that, apply your lipstick as your normally would. You’ll be blown away by how this quick step adds so much staying power.
Use a brush to apply lip color. Line your lips as we discussed above (this is a crucial step!) and then rather than going straight from the lipstick to your lip – paint the lips with a brush working your way from the peaks out to the edges. The brush will give you all sorts of control and the ability to make sure it’s all evenly applied. Easy peasy!
Use a loose powder to set the lip color. You really want to go easy here – light dusting means exactly that. Using a loose powder, lightly dust the lips after you’ve applied your color. This step plus gently blotting (if necessary) is going to set that lipstick for the long haul.
