There are many ways a heart can break. Relationship breakups, atrocious friendship betrayals, grief – anyone we love is capable of breaking our heart and destroying us.  Holidays are, of course, a time to be thankful for our loved ones. But what about the ones we’ve lost? A broken heart is sometimes the consequence of the ability to experience the sheer joy that can come from loving another human being that much. Moving on is necessary for survival.

As awful as it is, it truly is better to have loved and lost than to never love at all. If there was a switch you could simply turn off to stop loving the person(s) responsible for breaking your heart, would you flip it knowing that it would eradicate every happy memory you created together?

Detach.

If it’s an ex-partner that’s broken your heart, don’t rush into a new relationship or try to win them back when the going gets tough. Fill the void by spending time with great friends, and learning to love being independent again. Everything in life is temporary – short or long term, and detachment from what we cannot change is vital.

Help others.

Helping others gives us a sense of self, and it’s a natural response to feel warm inside when we help others. Whether it’s a friend, relative or complete stranger, help someone else just because.

Laugh and cry.

Feeling better after we laugh or cry is a fact of human nature. Tears remove toxic biochemicals from the body and relieve emotional stress, so there are benefits of a good cry. Laughing is equally essential, and you can count on your closest girlfriends to help mend your heart with the healing powers of laughter.

Have fun.

Take time to participate in activities that make you feel good and help you in moving on. Whatever it is that will make you feel happy, do it. Now is a great time to write and get a few items ticked off your bucket list.
