February 23rd – March 1st is an important week nationwide. Did you know it’s the 27th annual National Eating Disorder Awareness Week?
This year’s theme: I Had No Idea shares the ideal that eating disorders affect more people than you’d ever expect. A rarely known fact: nearly every socio-economic demographic in this country is affected in some way by eating disorders. From young to old, male to female and even wealthy to poor, in the United States more than 20 million women and 10 million men will face clinically significant eating disorders.
National Eating Disorder Week: I Had No Idea
“The goal of National Eating Disorders Awareness Week is to promote public and media attention to the seriousness of eating disorders and improve education about the biological underpinnings, environmental triggers, warning signs and how to help those struggling. Education and direction to resources can lead to earlier detection, intervention, and help-seeking, ultimately improving likelihood of full recovery.”
Addressing the misconceptions of eating disorders is an important mission – and we can all help. Check out all the ways you can support National Eating Disorder Week here and follow #NEDAwareness to learn how others just like you are supporting this significant movement.
