Whether you’re hitting the gym pretty hard or are headed out for a rigorous outdoor workout, sometimes a little more than water is in order. While water may quench your thirst, you need a bit more of a boost – a way to get those electrolytes back, and fast. Energy drinks are the best source for immediate relief and that quick jolt you need to get moving, so why not make your own? Rather than taking down a store bought energy drink loaded with dyes and flavoring, keep it simple and natural with your favorite homemade sports drinks. Here’s a look at some natural energy drinks you can make at home – and don’t worry, it’s quick and easy.
DIY Ginger Electrolyte Sports Drink
Boil 1 c. water with 3 – 4 slices fresh ginger.
Then mix in the juice of 1/2 lemon, 1 – 2 tbsp. raw honey, and 1/4 tsp. real sea salt.
Add water or ice to make 3 c. total
DIY Cranberry Maple Sports Drink
3 cups cranberry juice (100% juice)
5 cups water
½ teaspoon salt
2 tablespoons maple syrup
1 star anise (optional)
Mix together all the ingredients. If using star anise, leave to infuse for one hour then strain. Refrigerate.
Lay Low DIY Sports Drink
1/4 cup of freshly squeezed lime juice
1/4 cup freshly squeezed lemon juice
1 ½ to 2 cups fresh water, depending on how strong you want the flavor
1/8 teaspoon of sea salt
2 tablespoons natural sugar or honey, to taste
Toss everything into a food blender and blend until the honey is dissolved, or just use some elbow grease and blend it by hand. Pour yourself a tall glass, drop in a few ice cubes, and enjoy.
