Puffy eyes can be caused by a multitude of sins and common skin complaints– late nights, too much champagne, allergies, stress, hormone changes, tiredness, and infection.
Puffy eyes AKA periorbital puffiness describes when excess edema (fluid) gathers around the delicate tissues around the eyes where the skin is extremely thin and very sensitive.
Did you know that our eyes swell up after crying because the small glands in our eyelids that produce that product tears become inflamed from overactivity, resulting in those tell-tale puffy swollen eyes?
If you wake up with puffy eyes most mornings, there are a trio of common culprits – the first being too much salt in the diet, resulting in fluid retention, the second culprit is sleep deprivation and the third excessive alcohol.
Puffy Eyes: How to Banish Party Season Puffiness
As we transition into holiday party season with lots of social calendar of the year events upon us, we should be mindful of one too many glasses of champagne being the cause of tell-tale puffy eyes.
Here are my 4 top tips to slay those puffy eyes this party season:
Deflate puffy eyes.
Apply a chilled eye-mask or cold cucumber slices to your eyes when you wake up in the morning to reduce swelling. Don’t have either in your fridge? Wrap an ice cube in tissue and hold these over the eyes for 5-10 minutes.
Switch up your diet.
Lower your salt intake. This is just good for overall health, also.
Increase hydration.
Puffy eyes as a result of alcohol consumption and dehydration are a leading cause of puffy eyes. Increase your daily water intake to keep your body hydrated. Water-rich foods such as watermelon and cucumber are great for re-hydrating yourself in addition to drinking more water.
Pamper time.
Apply a miracle de-aging eye cream to reduce puffiness and the appearance of dark circles. I love Lumière de Vie® Eye Balm and use it religiously every morning and night.
