Relationship breakups can often feel soul destroying, with a panicked feeling that you will genuinely never laugh or feel happy again. I am super aware and appreciative every day of how incredibly lucky I am to have found my soul mate at such a young age, but that doesn’t mean I haven’t been there to see the absolute suffering relationship breakups have caused many of my nearest and dearest family and friends over the years.
Relationship Breakups: How to move on Like a Boss!
Relationship breakups can feel every bit as painful as grieving for someone close to you who passed away. After all, you’re mourning someone that left your side despite all of the promises you made to each other – the person who used to make your heart smile all day as you excitedly exchanged a million messages, mems and emojis. Your confidant, the reason you smiled in the morning and the reason you felt content when you closed your eyes at night.
It’s OK to feel shocked, angry and sad for a while.
Now, take a deep breath and remind yourself how remarkably exceptional you are and follow these tips to move on like a boss.
Keep your distance and reflect.
Go offline. Take that trip you’ve been mentally planning the itinerary for forever. Reflect on all of the reasons your relationship ended. Yes, there were good times. But for you to break up something was not working. Identify the issues, and consider whether you contributed to the end of the relationship. Understanding will help you to get closure, let go, move on and grow.
It’s makeover time.
Relationship breakups symbolize new beginnings. Get that new hairstyle, buy that dress that makes you feel beautiful and re-organize your personal space. Throw out the ghost(s) of boyfriend(s) past. Put any gifts out of sight, throw out the bedsheets you brought together, the photos of your travels, his tee-shirt… it’s time for a bedroom makeover worthy of a single independent queen.
Self-love is your new soul mate.
Take time to do the things that make you happy, and to re-assess your life goals. Self-love incorporates nourishing your body and your soul. Eat healthily, hit the gym hard and take time to do the things that make your soul happy. Grab that coffee and watch the sunset at the beach, treat yourself to that spa weekend or to something you’ve really wanted for ages. Do whatever makes you feel good about yourself and your life.
Set yourself smaller grieving periods each day.
This may sound a little strange, but hear me out. Only allocate yourself a small window each day to grieve for your relationship: to listen to THAT song, to look at all of the memories you shared together which you’ve hidden out of sight and to think about all of the reasons why you miss them. Start with 10 minutes each day before removing one minute per day until eventually, one day, you won’t feel the need to cry anymore. When your time is up, it’s time to dry your eyes, wash your face, put on some lipstick and go and slay your business life dragons.
Your life cannot come to a standstill or fall apart because of someone else. Use that anger and hurt as a catalyst to create a new fire in your belly to set new goals, then get out there and smash them.
