The days are getting longer and the sun sure has been shining – great news after a long winter. But you know what that means? More time outside equals more time in the sun. And, more time in the sun means stepping up your skin cancer prevention and getting smart about keeping your skin safe. No matter what your skin deserves your protection and making skin safety a number one priority for you and your family is absolutely essential. Not sure what you need to do? Here are ten tips for skin cancer prevention. For even more information, visit skincancer.org.
- Wear sunscreen every day. If you’re thinking sunscreen is just for beach days, think again. One of the best things you can do for your body is to lather up on the daily – especially when it comes to more consistently exposed areas like your hands, ears and face.
- Look for “broad spectrum” sunscreen to protect your face from all the different forms of the sun’s rays.
- Prevent sunburn before it starts – apply sunscreen liberally and early. Don’t wait to get burned and deal with the painful after effects.
- Wear a wide brimmed hat when you’re out in the sun. (any excuse for a great hat, right?)
- Cover up with clothing whenever you can. Showing a little skin is of course something we all want once in a while, but when you have the chance to cover up – then go for it. Your skin will thank you later.
- Invest in a great pair of large sunglasses – not just for protecting your eyes, but for also protecting the delicate skin around your eyes.
- How about a beach umbrella? The perfect solution for making your own shade when none is to be found.
- Skip the tanning bed. If you really need that off-season glow, try a spray tan.
- Try to avoid the strongest rays of the midday sun. If ever possible, duck inside during the early afternoon for a couple of hours – it’s the perfect time for a breezy nap on the porch.
- Get your skin checked regularly and stay in tune with your skin. Notice a funny bump or a spot that seems off color? Head straight to your doc or dermatologist for a full screening.
