It’s that time in New York where the leaves are just about ready to change and there are stray bursts of cool air. I can’t help but think that in just a few weeks the days are going to be a bit shorter meaning less sunlight to help re-energize me. Many of us don’t realize how important it is do get a dose of sunlight—and I’m not talking about basking poolside while covered in baby oil. Have you ever tried growing a plant without a source of light? It just won’t happen. The same goes for us. I find our need for light almost symbolic. Don’t underestimate the power of sunlight. If you have access to it, please take advantage.
But as the colder months approach, how can we help lessen the effects of a deficiency of sunlight? Here are a few pointers to help fight the winter blues:
1. Enjoy the morning sunlight. Make an effort to wake up early to catch those hours of sun. It’s also the time when risk of sunburn is the lowest.
2. Participate in an outdoor activity for at least 20 minutes a day. Go for a walk, a hike, or just meditate outside.
3. Open your blinds. Let sunlight into your house, and bring some outside in like a plant.
4. Eat foods high in vitamin D. To make up for the vitamin D your losing from a lack of sun, compensate where you can. Foods like fish, soy, and yogurt are all high in Vitamin D.
5. Make the best out of it! Enjoy time with family and friends, make yummy soups, light candles, and just try to shift your mood.
