Good news for parents across the nation – the US Department of Agriculture recently announced the release of new nutrition standards in schools. This has been the first refurbishment of the US school snack system in more than 30 years! Under the new system snacks like candy, chips and doughnuts will go by the wayside, while smarter options like baked chips, granola bars and trail mix will make an appearance.
The US School System Food Program Gets An Overhaul
The new regulations set standards that limit things like sugar, fat and salt in items sold in snack bars and vending machines. Another part of the new standards says that the school snack foods must include a fruit, veggie, protein or dairy as the first ingredient or contain at least 50% whole grains. Believe it or not, beverages will also be getting a second look under this new plan. Drinks with high levels of sugar, like sports drinks, will be replaced with lower calorie versions. Flavored water with no calories, fat-free and low-fat milk, 100% veggie and fruit juices will be allowed under the new standards.
According to the USDA, “Schools and food and beverage companies must meet these standards by July 1, 2014. That means the rules would be in effect for the 2014-2015 school year.” It’s pretty incredible, when you think about it – changing a school food program on a nation-wide level is a huge undertaking. I am thrilled that students will have access to such nutritious options – what do you think about this new system?
