As our calendars begin to get busier over the next couple of months, I thought it’d be useful to share some tips for styling your own hair at home. A good blow-dry doesn’t have to come from the salon – particularly if you’re in a rush and can’t get a last-minute appointment. Here’s a simple guide to getting that polished look just like the pros do it.
9 Tips for an Awesome Blow Dry at Home
1. Start with your fingers – Using a brush on wet or very damp hair can break or damage the strands. Instead, begin with your fingers, gently drying your hair and making it easier when you finally do take a brush to it later on.
2. Use a nozzle – Using a nozzle to control the direction of air flow will make it easier to style your hair.
3. Use a heat protector – Before continuing to dry your hair more intensely, work in a product to protect it from heat damage and stress.
4. Section off your hair – Drying your hair is easier in smaller sections. Always start at the bottom, the base of your neck, and work your way up, using hair clips to safely divide your hair and keep it in place. Blow dry each section carefully and move on to the next.
5. Go in the direction of the hair – Blowing air against the direction of hair growth will only leave you with frizzies and fly-aways. Instead, always dry in the direction of hair growth for the smoothest results.
6. Blow dry upside down for more volume – If you have thin or flat hair, or simply want to add more volume to your look, flip your head over and dry your hair with your fingers (using a brush will only flatten your hair).
7. Use a round brush – Using a round brush will help give you lift and volume as well as help shape your hair. A smaller brush will give you more waves whereas a larger round brush will give you longer, smoother results. Be sure to securely wrap the hair around the brush and lift at the roots.
8. Set with cold air – To set your hair, since you’ll be drying with hot air, give a quick burst of cold air. This should lock in your look for the whole day.
9. Lightly mist with hair spray – If you want to keep your look intact, try misting it with a bit of hair spray. This should also keep away frizz and fly-aways.
