Even though the changing of the seasons is typically a welcome shift, combatting the dry skin that comes with the chillier temps can be a challenge. From cracking hands to rough arms and legs, sometimes there’s not enough lotion in the world to keep skin feeling soft. When your skin starts to get itchy and flaky, you know it’s time to step up your moisturizing game. In anticipation of the coming seasons, here are a few tips for beating dry skin during fall and winter.
9 Tips for Beating Dry Skin for Fall & Winter
#1. Go for shorter showers with lukewarm water. Cooler water will help maintain the skin’s moisture while hot, hot water will strip the moisture right out of skin. Despite the temptation for a warm winter bubble bath, stick to shorter showers in lukewarm water.
#2. Gently exfoliate from head to toe a couple times a week. Use a gentle exfoliator like a homemade sugar scrub to help slough off dry and flaky skin.
#3. Rather than using soap, opt for a moisturizing body wash. Look for natural ingredients like coco butter and coconut oil for that added moisturizing touch.
#4. When it comes to shaving cream, stay on the lookout for similar moisturizing options – shea butter, aloe and jojoba oil are all great options for moisturizing elements that can be incorporating into your shaving routine.
#5. Once you’re out of the shower, pat your skin dry rather than rubbing.
#6. Make moisturizing part of your daily routine. Once you’re out of the shower and you’ve (patted!) dry, moisturize from your head to your toes with your favorite moisturizer or natural remedy like coconut oil, almond oil or avocado oil.
#7. Never skip the sunscreen, even in the winter. Broad spectrum sunscreen will help protect your skin against the bright winter glare and UV rays just like it does in summer – and will help keep your skin soft and moisturized.
#8. Add a humidifier – when you start cranking the heat, the air gets instantly dry and makes it much more difficult for skin to stay moisturized. Adding a humidifier to your home will help pump moisture into the air, and into your skin.
#9. Hydrate! Hydration from the inside-out is the best way to keep your skin glowing and moisturized. Water is great for skin health and also keeps it soft, supple and looking young and fresh. When in doubt, don’t skip the water!
