What To Ask Your Doctor During Your Annual Checkup

Your annual visit to the doctor is one of the most important steps you can take to understand your body and your health each year. From setting goals with your wellness and weight to understanding what’s happening as you age, knowing what to ask your doctor at your annual checkup will help ensure you leave feeling like you got the most out of your visit. The time with your doctor is typically fairly short – so making the most out of that time is essential to getting your concerns and your questions on the table. If you’re feeling nervous – make a list! An informed patient is a good patient. Keep reading for the questions that will give you the peace of mind you need.

  1. Is my full-body health the same as last year, better or is there something I should be concerned about? An annual visit with the same doctor is helpful for gauging the state of your health each year – having something to measure and compare will help you understand the steps you need to take or what you’re doing right.
  2. Is everything within normal limits? Ask about blood pressure, weight, Body Mass Index (BMI), skin and nail color and even your breathing.
  3. What about my family history – am I at risk for disease? Understanding your family history will help you understand what to watch for and how to best prevent disease with a wellness program tailored to you.
  4. Explain and ask about any emotional difficulties you may have experienced in the last year. Ask if this is something you should be concerned about.
  5. Am I receiving all the right tests for someone of my age? Is there anything else I can be doing to have a better understanding of my body?
  6. If you have been struggling with sleep, talk to your doctor about it. Explain the circumstances and ask what you can do to help solve the problem and if it’s something you should be concerned about.
  7. Be sure to inquire about your birth control – explain any issues you may be having and ask if this birth control is the right one for you.
  8. If you’re thinking about getting pregnant, now’s the time to ask your doctor what you need to know, how to taper off your birth control and what your concerns should be.
  9. If you have any birth marks or sun spots that seem off in color or size, point them out to your doctor and ask if you should be concerned.
  10. Am I getting enough exercise and eating the right foods to maintain good health?

Have you been to an annual exam lately? What do you wish you had asked your doctor?
