Living in Miami during the harsh winters has helped me avoid what’s commonly known as SAD, or seasonal affective disorder. But I know a lot of people that deal with this type of seasonal depression and the good news is that it’s treatable! If you’ve been diagnosed with seasonal affective disorder, you might start to feel fatigued, moody, disinterested and generally unhappy once daylight gets shorter and the temps get colder. Here’s what you can do about SAD now that winter’s shown it’s face:
Why Winter Makes You SAD (and what to do about it)
- Make an appointment with your doc!
- Light therapy mimics real sunlight and can cause a change in your brain chemicals, which are linked to mood.
- Seeing a therapist on a weekly basis can help you talk about your stress, anxiety or depression and identify how to cope with those feelings best.
- Eating right and exercising (outside!) boosts confidence, releases endorphins and nourishes your body during a sluggish season.
- Make sure you are getting enough vitamins and minerals, including Omega-3’s and Vitamin D supplements.
