Coco Rocha Talks Modeling & Social Media with Forbes
On the ways Twitter and Instagram have changed modeling for Coco: When social media first started, most models all kind of looked alike. I mean you wouldn’t even know our names. We were very replaceable. I think we have jumped to the next chapter: Yes models are still replaceable but we have a voice now thanks to social media.
On having a social media presence (both being empowering & scary): At the beginning a lot of people were telling me, ‘No one’s doing this, be quiet. You shouldn’t be talking.’ I wasn’t talking too much about anything but you know you just vocalize about body issues with models and…. I decided to really go that route when Anna Wintour asked me to speak at the CFDA health initiative on how to have healthy models on your runways, and I thought, ‘If I have your blessing to say that, then I’m sure I can continue on doing this.’
On finding success the second time around: My affirming moments were people who rejected you in the past and then are like, ‘Hi sweetie I love your work!’ and it’s like, ‘Remember the time I came to that casting when I was 15? I still remember.’
One the ways social media has affected Coco’s mentality about modeling: Now I get to be more me.
