Empowering Female Film Characters

I know I often write about powerful female character that we see in film and TV, but today I wanted to focus on film. It’s so easy to get lost in a feature where we follow the tale of a strong female lead who isn’t afraid to kick butt, show her smarts, or change the world. I believe we need stronger female leads in media so it’s important that we celebrate them when we see them. Who’s your favorite female movie character? Is she in the list below? Let me know in the comments! I’m interested in what you guys are talking about.

Katniss- Katniss became a phenomenon in the Hunger Games books by proving that strength in love can trump all things. In the film version, she wins hearts while battling the capitol and keeping those she loves safe. She’s also vulnerable and shows her scars without shame. She’s flawed but a true hero in every sense of the word.

Furiosa- Mad Max: Fury Road is a recent film about how blatant masculinity can become a problem in our society. Furiosa and Mad Max along with other female and male characters fight together to save humanity.

Merida- Brave is a totally unique Disney film, and I love Merida. She’s so strong in her beliefs that she is able to sway her mother and father into letting her grow up before she has to get married. She has a one of a kind personality and isn’t afraid to show it off.

Luna Lovegood- In the Harry Potter series, Luna comes off as loopy weirdo who is an outcast, even in a school full of witches and wizards. Yet, Luna has smarts for days and proves herself in battle. She is the wise fool character and my personal favorite HP character.
