Guest Blogger: Local Bloggers Take on Basel

To celebrate Art Basel, I’ve asked some local Miami bloggers to write about their Basel-ing experience. Today on the blog, we’ve got one of my favorite lifestyle bloggers, Natalie Leon from Wine With Nat and here’s what she’s got to say about her Art Basel experience:

The Miami rain didn’t stop me from enjoying Art Basel related festivities this year. It did, however, make my hair look like it might be considered a Lion King-inspired art installation of its own. So with a head of frizzy hair and my amazing hubby by my side, I ate from some food trucks, danced, ate some more, drank local craft beer and snapped some pictures. Here’s some of what I explored at Art Basel 2015.

Friday night, we headed to Hive, the pop-up art village at Mana Wynwood produced by the SWARM event agency. It was the perfect spot to kickback and enjoy some live music (while people watching).

Dancing with Flute

I even danced with the gentleman playing the flute^

Aside from supplying their pop-up skinny bar, R.S.V.P. Cocktail Skinnies provided some photo booth fun to Hive. I think we can all agree that after a few drinks, pictures at a photo booth are a must. In minutes, I received an animated GIF straight to my inbox that made the cutest Instagram post of me and the hubby.

Next, we visited J. Wakefield Brewing, a Miami brewery adorned with cool comic books all over their walls. I can’t say that I’m a beer fanatic, but I tried some local craft beers and Rekorderlig Passionfruit Cider (yummy). They didn’t have wine, but they did have a DJ playing hip-hop music and the Purple People Eatery food truck parked upfront. I’m still dreaming about those truffled loaded cheese fries I inhaled (thank you, beer buzz). If you are a fan of comic books and beer, this brewing experience is a must-try.

Saturday, we decided to give our feet a rest and joined some friends at The Butcher Shop. Here, I ordered a bottle of 2014 Portillo Malbec from Argentina, flavored with berries and peppers. It has a smooth finish, making this wine a good choice. I even shared the German Pretzel and Pan Seared Pierogies with the hubby and some friends. It’s true that drinking wine and sharing food creates memories with loved ones, especially during Art Basel.

I’m a sucker for quotes, so the artistic graffiti all over the concrete sidewalks in Wynwood definitely stood out to me. Here’s one to remind me that I’m over 21 (where has time gone?).

21&Older

Enough about the food and booze (for now), on Sunday, the hubby and I did make our way to Art Miami, the leading international contemporary and modern art fair, that took place at the Midtown Miami complex in Wynwood before making our way to their sister fair, CONTEXT Art Miami (Special thanks to our friend Will Omonte for hooking us up with tickets). With miles and miles of impressive artwork, I must say that the Pepperoni Pizza by Peter Anton is one to write about. I would totally put this up in my kitchen.

I could go on and on about Art Basel and the way local artists impressively hustle to get noticed (keep it up). I had a great time this weekend and the dark circles under my eyes on Monday morning were there to prove it.

Cheers to Basel!
