How to Plan a Party in 10 Easy Steps

1) Select a date & a budget: Choose a date and set it in stone because everything else will revolve around it. Figure out how much you’d like to spend and write out a list of things you must have and things you would like but can do without.

2) Book your venue: If the event will take place at home, then you’re one step ahead and saving on the budget. If not, book appointments and go see two to three options to make sure you’re selecting the best spot for your budget.

3) Choose a theme: This is the fun part! Let your imagination run wild. Write out a list and search through Pinterest for ideas.

4) Hire a photographer: You’ll want to be sure you can capture the day. Hire a professional if your budget allows, or have a friend or relative who is great behind the lens take some pictures for you. You can also create a custom hashtag and ask everyone at the party to tag their pictures so you can see all of them later. Creating a photo booth is also a fun idea – set out props for guests to use.

5) Hire a caterer & decide on a menu: If your venue includes catering, then you just have to decide on a menu to fit the theme. Little bites are great for events where people are mostly standing. For events where people are seated, there are buffet and plated options. Don’t forget to add water, soda and mixers to your beverage list. Regardless of the style you choose, if you’re throwing this party at home, consider hiring a caterer to make the experience easier. Cooking and hosting a party are very difficult to do simultaneously!

6) Choose your entertainment: Whether it’s creating a fun playlist for your party or hiring a band, you’ll want your guests to enjoy entertainment relating to your theme. For example, if you’re having a Havana Nights themed party, think about hiring a cigar roller or salsa dancers to round out your party.

7) Order/rent decor, tables, chairs, and linens: Don’t forget about the basics. Be sure to rent enough tables and chairs so that the majority of people have a place to set down their drink and food. If you want people to keep moving, consider using a mix of tall cocktail tables and low cocktail rounds with chairs. There should be a few extra linens and napkins just in case any get ruined or stained.

8) Send out invitations: Custom invitations are easy to do these days. Check Etsy for custom design orders you can print at home or visit a local craft store to choose card stock for home crafting and printing. Regardless of your choice, make sure to let the guest know the: time, location, theme, and RSVP date. Invitations are usually sent out between 6-8 weeks prior to the event.

9) Choose favors, sweets & treats: This is another fun one! Aside from traditional desserts, candy and dessert stations are a fun way to display sweet cravings and allow people to choose their favorites. Don’t forget about party favors to commemorate the date. Try to incorporate your theme in these little details.

10) Ask for help and enjoy your day! If you can help it and your budget allows, hire someone (or a few people) to help you on the big day. If you try to do it all yourself, it will be very difficult to enjoy the party. If professional help is out of the budget, ask friends and relatives to pitch in. Above all else, have fun!
