Going to the movies is one of my favorite things to do when I want to have a relaxing time with friends or family. This weekend, I’ll be heading to theaters to check out “Compadres,” which opens in theaters on Friday.
Omar Chapparo and Joey Morgan star as an unlikely duo that reluctantly partnered up to take down the bad guys. Along the way they meet a cast of colorful characters played by Eric Roberts, Kevin Pollak, Aislinn Derbez, and Camila Sodi.
I spoke to Camila this week about her role in the film and I learned a little more about how she balances being a busy actress and a mother-of-two.
How did you get involved with the film?
“It was kind of a fortunate accident for me. I was in Las Vegas promoting an action TV series called Señorita Pólvora, when I got a call from my manager saying the director and the producer [of ‘Compadres’] knew me and they wanted to see if I’d drive to Ensanada to do it. At first I was hesitant, it all sounded really shady!
In the end I just thought, ‘well my kids are with grandma and I have some spare time. I have three days, does that work?’ So they said, ‘yeah that works.’ So I accepted the project. When I got to Ensenada, I was overwhelmed by how gorgeous it is there. They have vineyards, the water, huge rocks and the desert.
So yeah, when I got to there and I saw the magnitude of the film I was so surprised! I thought I was just coming to help out some friends.”
You play the role of Emilia, what can you tell us about her?
“My character developed into a bigger part than it was originally written. To be completely honest, this is very much a guy’s film. The women in the film are in it for about 20 seconds. There were just three of us and we each got very small roles. But as it is true in real life, the film just wouldn’t work without us females.”
As a busy mom and actress, how do you balance your schedule?
“It’s a constant work of consciousness and meditation. It’s about being present in the moment and knowing why you’re doing things and not losing perspective. I just don’t take it too seriously. Maybe that’s the focus? I also try to work on things I like but also projects that keep me near home.”
I’m obsessed with your Instagram account. Any chance you’ll follow in your tia Thalia’s footsteps into fashion and beauty?
“I started a jewelry line with a friend of mine and we have some cool stuff. It’s called Resurrexion and we only use Mexican silver. I also collaborated with a shoe designer during the fall/winter last year. I’m always looking for exciting, new little projects. I like my country. It’s blossoming.”

Why should everyone run out this weekend and watch your new movie?
The movie is out this Friday and I think it’s a cool film. Plus Omar looks pretty hot, right? I used to live here in the U.S. and my life used to be half in English and half in Spanish. Sometimes I have this yearning to go to the movies and watch a film that’s half English and half Spanish the way my life was then. This is a Spanglish movie where you get to see a lot of action, very little of the hot girls but you get to see us! [laughs]
The film is about an American and a Mexican being friends. I think it’s an important time to talk about that when there’s a guy with a wig and a fake tan trying to build a wall. You know? I think it’s important.”
