Antonio Navarro is being accused of murdering his leading lady, but did he actually commit the murder? This was the premise of the latest episode of the FOX hit dramedy, “Rosewood” starring Morris Chestnut and Jaina Lee Ortiz. I spoke to Juan Pablo di Pace who guest starred as Antonio to learn more about what it was like playing a telenovela actor as well as some scoop on “Fuller House.”
You recently guest starred on “Rosewood.” Tell me about your experience.
“It was a really fun episode because the whole “Rosewood” team goes into a telenovela set. There’s a murder that happens, the lead actress of the telenovela is killed. So they suspect Antonio Navarro, who is her leading man. You have to watch and see what happens!”
“Lisa Vidal’s character is very involved in this episode. She is so fantastic and an incredible actress. The banter that goes on between Morris and Jaina during the case was a lot of fun to watch.”
You made a huge splash when you joined the cast of “Fuller House” as Kimmy Gibbler’s husband. What was it like to be part of this cast?
“It was kind of unreal for me to join the show. ‘Full House” arrived to television in Argentina much later than it did in the United States. We didn’t get it until 1995 and I was already much older than most people when they watched it.
But these characters on the show are very beloved and they are in the collective unconscious of the world. So to get the job and to work with them was so fun and such a dream. Those girls are the best.
Jodie [Sweetin], Candace [Cameron Bure], and Andrea [Barber] really, really, really love being there. They absolutely love doing their job. They could not be happier returning to something they all cherished so much. You can tell during shooting, even from the audience. Normally they’re told when they should clap and laugh but no one has to tell them during “Fuller House.” The reactions are so genuine and people love being there.”

Kimmy Gibbler and her husband Fernando still have a lot to work on in their relationship. Do you want to see them end up together?
“I think Kimmy and Fernando are so meant to be together. Maybe he’s not the most loyal person but we can leave all of that in the past. That is something that he can learn about, move on and be a better man. I’d hate for them not to be together. They are both so zany that they compliment each other.
They are Ramona’s parents. They’re pretty much Ramona’s kids. Ramona is the adult in the relationship. It’s so true of many families. That’s why “Fuller House” works. [The stories] are very true to life. There are kids out there without parents, kids with one parent, kids with divorced parents, multiracial marriages. It’s all real and it’s a lot of fun to be a part of it.”

Speaking of Ramona, you looked great playing a dad! Has this role made you look forward to being a dad?
“Oh yeah, for sure. It was kind of weird at first because it’s the first time I play a dad. For sure I have a huge connection with Soni [Bringas]. She’s one lovely, sweet, talented kid. I couldn’t have asked for a better TV daughter. She’s so professional, affectionate and talented as well. She’s one of those kids who knows her lines before anyone else does. She’s uber prepared. She’s just so good at her job.
And then she’s also a talented dancer and really her timing is amazing. It’s a huge pleasure to work with Soni.”

The big cliffhanger at the end of season 1 was whether D.J. would pick new beau Dr. Matt (John Brotherton) or her first love Steve (Scott Weinger) to ride off into the sunset with. Who are you cheering for?
“I’m not either. I think they’re both amazing on the show. John and Scott are both incredible actors. They’re so charming and they both bring something wonderful to the show. I just could not choose.”
Who would your character Fernando choose?
Fernando had a tiff with Matt because he was hugging his wife. I guess he might be too good looking to have around the women in the house. But I don’t even think that would be an issue. Once he knows there’s no competition, there’s no issue. He’s quite friendly with everyone. I don’t think he would choose either. Fernando is #teamkimmy! He just wants Kimmy.”
