Movie Day: Period Pieces

Sometimes, it’s nice to go back in time and spend a day distracted by affairs in horse carriages, heart break over propriety along with some old-fashioned corsets (I had to add fashion in there. Come on!). It’s Sunday, ladies, which probably means that your spending the day curled up next to your Netflix, Hulu, or Amazon Prime accounts. If you’re all out of ideas on what to watch, I have some great recommendations of my favorite period pieces. Check them out below. Happy watching!

Pride And Prejudice- You didn’t think I was going to go through a whole list about period pieces and not mention a Jane Austin adaptation, did you? The Victorian era writer is known for the various adaptations inspired  by her books (as well as her novels, of course), but none so famous as the Masterpiece Classic version of Pride and Prejudice starring Colin Firth. When it comes to Mr. Darcy’s, he may just be everyone’s top pick. This series definitely makes for a day of watching a memorable period piece.

The Young Victoria- When you think of movies featuring queens, kings and England, they usually include plot lines like those seen on Game Of Thrones: murder, plotting, sex and lots of battle scenes. The Young Victoria is something completely different. It’s full heart as it chronicles the first few turbulent years of Queen Victoria’s reign as queen, as well as her sweet and enduring love affair with Prince Albert. It’s an empowering film that will also give you the same butterflies as a good romantic comedy.

Walk The Line- No, this isn’t exactly your typical period piece. This film dramatizes the career of country star, Johnny Cash and his romance with June Carter Cash. It won Reese Witherspoon the Oscar and it makes for a really great movie. Watch it if your in the mood for a drama with a happy ending.

Outlander- When they say that Game Of Thrones is feminist—well, let’s just say that GOT has nothing on Outlander. It’s a show well into its second season about a nurse living in 1945 who mysteriously gets sent back in time to 1743. She essentially has to fight crime and have a sexy romance with a spirited and handsome Scottish warrior. Yes please!
