Plus-size Model Makes A Debut In Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition

Making more headlines than some of the biggest world news right now, Sports Illustrated recently announced the rookies appearing in the latest swimsuit edition. Making her way to the top of that news is Robyn Lawley, size 12 model – the curviest model to ever appear in Sports Illustrated Swimsuit edition. As it turns out (and, believe it or not!) size 12 actually is considered plus-size in the fashion world. With the average woman ringing in at about size 14, it’s pretty astonishing that size 12 is considered plus-size. Not to mention, Robyn Lawley looks incredible!!

In an interview with Time Magazine, Sports Illustrated Assistant Managing Editor, MJ Day said, Lawley had been on her radar for years and is being highlighted as a model rather than as a “plus size” model. She added, “She sort of embodies the classic SI girl — she’s interesting, she’s beautiful, she has an incredible body, and I felt that she would make a great addition to the issue. It was simple as that.”

Just a short time ago, Lawley made a public Facebook announcement, sharing the news that she’d applied to be one of the models featured in the 2015 Swimsuit edition. She made quite a stir on social media with the announcement as people far and wide supported the idea that a woman with a body more representative of the average woman should grace the pages of the magazine. Even Sports Illustrated Assistant Managing Editor was quoted in TIME, saying, “To be totally honest, I am a size 12. I’m not saying I see myself in [Lawley] because my body doesn’t look as good as hers, but I knew that when I found the right person who could represent that, she would be in the issue.”

From starting her own swimsuit line to doing the Sports Illustrated shoot when she was in her first trimester (and, still looks great!), Lawley is truly an inspiration to women worldwide. She’s been on the cover of Vogue Italia, been featured in a Ralph Lauren ad and made even more waves when she was the first plus-size model to appear in an editorial spread in Vogue Australia in 2013. She’s written a book, maintains a food blog and is even a successful DJ – the question is: what can’t Robyn Lawley do?

An inspiration to women everywhere, Lawley is adamant that labels in the modeling world (and in general) just aren’t necessary. It’s about being healthy and embracing your body, curves and all. What do you think of Lawley getting her chance to appear in the latest Sports Illustrated Swimsuit edition?
