It’s no secret that Hollywood isn’t exactly known for producing stories about people from all walks of life. Things are changing. America has spoken. We want diversity on television and in movies that reflect real life. Hollywood has finally listened. Here are some amazing TV shows changing the game on Hollywood’s diversity problem.
Master of None- Aziz Ansari’s new Netflix TV show, Master of None, includes an ethnically diverse cast from all different backgrounds. According to co-creator Alan Yang, their casting wasn’t at all purposeful. They just wanted an interesting cast full of cool people and luckily, they succeeded!
New Girl- New Girl has a pretty diverse cast that boasts as many diverse cast members as it does white members. Maybe you were too busy laughing to notice, though?
Orange is the New Black- Orange is the New Black gets praised for a lot of reasons. It’s quality television that’s bringing attention to this country’s prison system while also giving viewers the most diverse cast of women on TV right now. Sure, the show is about Piper, but we get a backstory of each and every one of these characters, making the show feel more about everyone.
Black-ish- We’ve been waiting for a sitcom like Black-ish for a long time. It stars Anthony Anderson and Tracee Ellis Ross. It’s about a successful black family trying to navigate life in a predominately white neighborhood. The show ends up being more about the family and their daily trials than anything else. I love this show!
Fresh Off the Boat- Fresh Off the Boat is the first Asian-American sitcom to be broadcast on network TV in over 20 years, and it’s only just the beginning of things to come. This show centers on the early life of Eddie Huang, celebrity chef and writer.
Other diverse TV shows worth your time include Empire, How to Get Away With Murder, Scandal, Girl Code, Key and Peele and Transparent. Check these great shows out!
