Would a real-life Barbie sell in stores? Pittsburgh artist Nickolay Lamm has recreated a 3D model of Barbie with the real-life proportions of an average 19-year-old woman and is ready to take it to the next level.
“I wanted to see if an average-sized Barbie had market potential,” Nickolay Lamm told the Daily News in an email. And the good news is that it does! With the same bright pink fashions and bleach-blond hair, Barbie 2.0 is just as pretty and will most likely sell in stores.
Lamm changed Barbie’s original waist size of 16 inches to 33 inches, which is similar and proportionate to a real person’s waist.
“I created normal Barbie to show that average is beautiful,” Lamm said.
Lamm also mentioned that he feels there’s a good chance of Barbie negatively affecting young girls’ body image, and he isn’t the only one who thinks this.
In April, a website published a chart illustrating how anatomically impossible it would be for Barbie to exist in real life. With her extreme proportions, she would be forced to walk on all fours and incapable of carrying anything in her skeletal arms.
