Life Hacks: How to Prevent Hangovers This Summer

One of the main culprits of tell-tale headaches, nausea, and the shakes so familiar the day after enjoying a few alcoholic beverages is dehydration. Alcohol is a diuretic, resulting in our bodies losing a lot of water on those lazy summer days sipping on seemingly harmless cocktails or rose wine. As the human body attempts to restore lost fluids, blood vessels narrow, which results in less oxygen reaching the brain which can trigger the all-day headaches.

Liquor causes inflammation and irritation to the stomach lining in addition to increased stomach acid production. Throw in the hangover-induced release of the toxin acetaldehyde, and you’re saying hello to some post-fun severe nausea. Many experts believe that the immune system processes alcohol as a threat, which is why many people often exude flu-like symptoms for a day or two after too many alcoholic refreshments.

Unfortunately, there is no miracle cure for a hangover. But these tips can protect your body and prevent you from suffering the more severe side effects.

#1. Line your stomach.

Never drink alcohol on an empty stomach. Always eat a good meal thirty minutes or so before drinking to line your stomach with healthy fats and lean protein.

#2. Opt for clear or lighter liquors.

The lighter or clearer the liquor, the fewer congeners and hangover-inducing poisons. Vodka and gin are favored options, as they are low calorie too if you opt to mix them with soda water and fresh lime.

#3. Drink water in-between.

Sneak in as much water as you can throughout the day/evening.

#4. Have a bedtime ritual.

Before you go to bed, remember to eat something salty and aim to drink a pint of water.
