Defining Moments, Define Your Character

Guest Blogger Tiff & Nick

Growing up in an athletic environment allowed me and my sister to learn many lessons directly related to work and life. My Dad often utilized the car ride home from a sporting event as a teaching tool. We would debate successes and failures of the game. We would also discuss the team performance in general, and and my own individual performance in particular. These car rides seemed tortuous and lengthy on the days I did not perform to my potential, but for the most part our conversations were honest and fair. One lesson always emphasized with great importance was, “Don’t let your performance on the field change who you are as a person.” Essentially my Dad was saying, never treat others poorly as a result of your poor performance. Likewise, if you have a stellar performance you shouldn’t behave in an arrogant manner.

The fact is there will always be good days and bad days; at work and in athletics (a talented few call this a career). Performance, at times, can be dictated by us and sometimes by events beyond our control. Please don’t make the mistake of treating others differently based on your specific day to day experiences and situations at work. If you can maintain an even, polite and caring disposition through your successes and failures, you will be perceived as a WINNER regardless of your results! You will also benefit from a loyal group of team members who will strive to do
their best.

Treating others poorly is a disservice to you and more importantly to others. In some organizations things will go right 90% of the time. However, it is the 10% negativity that seems to have a greater impact on everyone around you. These also happen to be defining moments…when your true character is revealed. A single negative act, word or reaction can stick with others forever. In an instant it can wipe out all the good deeds that have come before.

Now I realize that we are all human and that it’s much harder to control disappointment than to celebrate success. When times get tough, simply take a time out and regain your poise. But resist the urge to take it out on your friends and co-workers.Maintaining respect for others goes a long way and is simply the right thing to do. Choose how you want to be remembered in defining moments!
