We all have dreams – a dream job, a dream for our family, it is the way we are built. What is the obstacle that prevents us from pursuing our dream(s)? Fear – the fear of the unknown, fear of instability, fear of failure. Last year I learned a valuable lesson; never give up on your dreams, ever. My passion is writing and it is what drives me. My dream is to be a successful writer in the fashion industry and also write women empowerment books. I had been actively pursuing that dream by starting a blog and writing PR pitches, but then financial fears and self-doubt came crashing over me. In one fell swoop (or offer), I dropped my passion and moved to another state to take a job with a secure corporate paycheck.
This move was in the complete opposite direction of my dream, but I rationalized my decision. It is absolutely normal to feel the need for security, especially if you are the sole provider in home. With that being said, pursuing a dream passionately and staying true to yourself is really the only recipe for success (and happiness for that matter). My stint in the new city did not last long, everything in me resonated that I was in the wrong place. To add to that instinct, my life was falling apart in the new city . One night while tossing and turning it came to me, I was not where I was supposed to be. That reality was made painfully clear. I left the job and the new city .
When I made the move to the new city I had to abandon my writing due to lack of time. I went from steady readership on my blog to now re-introducing it and starting from scratch. Honestly, I would not have it any other way. A quote from Kelly Cutrone’s book, If You Have to Cry Go Outside comes to mind, “Ultimately, if you are doing what you are meant to do – if you are in your truth – doors will open for you.” This is the absolute truth, and when you are on the path to your purpose, all else falls into place. Trusting yourself and your drive to achieve your dream is essential.
What is your truth? Are you letting fears pull you in a different direction for security or to comply? Getting started towards your dream is scary, but take baby steps at first and before you know it you will be in full stride. Do one thing a day that brings you closer towards your goal(s). The only one responsible for creating the best life for yourself is you; no one else has that responsibility.
Dream big, do not let fear trip you up, and move forward with passion and love. That is the lesson I learned.
