On my last guest post, I introduced you to the wonderful world of Public Relations. Now, let me take it a step further and introduce you to the different areas of Public Relations. PR is a very broad field and while the overall results deal with image and money, there is a process to get there! Research, Media Relations, Social Media and Writing all play supporting roles in Public Relations.
What Is Public Relations Anyway?
What Are You Willing To Sacrifice For Your Dreams?
Lets say we are working on a marketing campaign for a company named Kamar Innovations. The company will be launching a line of skoodlez dolls (which is a toy). A PR professional would first spend hours doing research before attacking this campaign. Research would include but not be limited to background information on the company and its competitors, target publics (placing them in specific groups) and the best way to reach them. After research has been gathered, PR practitioners would use media relations to seek out publicity opportunities for the company and its product. Media Relations can vary from print, broadcast and digital media. Most PR professionals already have established relationships with various media outlets.
Social Media has become a phenomenon within the Public Relations field. PR Pros use social media every single day to get word out about clients and their products. Some popular sites are twitter, facebook and youtube. With this campaign, we would make sure that Kamar Innovations has a fan page, twitter page and linkedin profile. After research and media, writing ties it all together. PR Pros write everything from strategy, press releases, biographies, pitch letters to case studies, white papers etc. (which I will touch on another time)
So, when you’re thinking about your company’s image and the best way to market your product and reach target audiences, remember it’s all a process with these specific supporting areas.
