Living in chaos and being in chaos are draining and unhealthy environments that can eventually lead to your own detriment if left too long. Being tired, having too much to do, not knowing where to start and how to get to the other side is an overwhelming place to be in. I really get that – managing a full time dance career and launching a completely different coaching business no easy task and some days I feel just as mushy as a university student cramming before the most important test of the year. But today I’m going to translate my 3 nifty tricks that I use every day to get out my own muck so they can work for any situation in your life to help you suss out overwhelm, chaos and mental clutter. So let’s just get straight to the point (I know reading this isn’t the only thing you want to do today).

Can’t Keep Up? 3 Surprising Ways to Simplify Your Day

1.      Plan ahead

The simplest way to stay on track – As you finish the day – make your last activity before leaving work/watching TV/going to bed planning your tasks out for the next day.

2.      Clear out your brain – with laughter

I do a laughter yoga exercise called mental floss when things just get crazier. To me there is no better remedy for chaos and crazy clutter than a different and more purposeful type of craziness: Laughter Yoga – imagine you are holding a big bit of dental floss between your ears and pull it back and forth like flossing while making a squeaky sound. I dare you to try it – you know you can be brave (it works better than meditation)

3.      Prioritize

Figure out where you really want your time to be spent and make those your top priorities. If you know where you want to spend the majority of your time then you can say no and spend minimum time on tasks and activities that aren’t going to fulfil you. Its a no brainer really – you have the opportunity to design the life you want and that includes where you chose to spend your time.

Brownie points ideas:

  •    Write out your to do list and puts #1s by all the things that have to be done first, #2s besides those to do next and so on. Only do the #2s when you have done all the #1 tasks.
  • Take a mini break and count 10 breaths.
  • Stop work at a good time that allows enough downtime for you to spend nourishing and taking care of yourself (running yourself to the ground doesn’t mean good hard work, good work is smart work).
  • Say no (I dare you to drop one thing that is taking up time that you know you don’t want to be spent there) – you only live life once, what’s the point spending it on things that suck?

Clearing up your day is like flexibility– it requires just a bit of good work every day and especially done daily you can see the improvement and feel the release quickly. Don’t stay in a mucky chaotic place. There is no point and the person losing out is you. Pick one of the tips above to do this week to work at improving the clutter in your life and tell me what it is in the comments below!
