It’s probably pretty safe to assume that most of us save as much of our vacation time for summer as possible. Nothing really says vacation like sunny days on the beach and relaxing on cool summer evenings. Unfortunately, sometimes packing up the car and rounding up the kiddos can end up feeling like more of a chore than an adventure – and our much anticipated vacays end up starting off on the wrong foot. Rather than going straight into frantic mode, here’s a look at some tricks of the trade, from packing to planning – with a list of 25 things all great travelers know.
- Booking flights can be a waiting game – sit tight until about 3pm on Tuesday’s. Turns out – this is the cheapest way to get tix.
- Need to get a deal? Plan your trip for the off season (like go tropical in the summer) for great prices. Bonus: a lot less tourists for a more authentic experience!
- Look for coupons, codes and deals when searching the web for good prices on your destination.
- Read traveler reviews of hotels for the real scoop. Many travelers even include their own photos – total inside info for what the resort really looks like.
- Want to be sure every moment of the trip is budgeted for? Be sure to factor in things like baggage fees and taxes when traveling.
- Use spare glasses cases and Ziploc baggies to store all your tech cords and earbuds in one spot.
- Separate jewelry with old pill bottles! Keeps everything organized and necklaces won’t get tangled.
- Add a “fragile” tag to your luggage – and watch your bag get the royal treatment. (it may even come out first)
- Keep your clothes smelling great by hiding a dryer sheet in the bottom of your suitcase.
- Keep a couple of spare, empty plastic bags in your luggage (like a grocery bag) – these are perfect for dirty clothes and shoes.
- Use Ziploc baggies to store anything that might leak: cosmetics, shampoo, sunscreen etc.
- Think about packing shoes that are versatile, rather than multiple pairs that can only be worn with a single outfit.
- Throw in your own pillow case – it will remind you of home and when your hotel is a little sketchy, you can switch it out.
- Go for a suitcase that’s bright and distinguishable. Being able to spot your luggage at baggage claim is a huge help.
- Use tissue paper to wrap and separate delicate clothing (like silks).
- Got glass bottles? (like perfume you just can’t live without) Pack in a plastic baggie and then, inside your sneakers for extra padding and cushion.
- Purchase an array of small travel-sized containers so that you can travel with all your favorite products. There’s nothing worse than not having your fave products!
- Protect your clothes from the dirty soles of your shoes with shower caps. (this is genius!)
- If you forgot your phone charger – don’t panic! Most hotels have spares these days – just check with the front desk.
- A little fearful of turbulence? Did you know that the seats by the wings have the least amount?
- You can actually use Google maps offline by typing in OK Maps in the search bar – your last used map will pop up.
- Need to score some freebie wifi? Check out FourSqaure – many people leave the passwords in the comments.
- Do your fine dining at lunch. You’ll save a heap of money and still get the all-star experience of the restaurant.
- Road tripping? Stock a cooler full of pre-portioned, bagged snacks and juice boxes for the kiddos and mom and dad.
- Have a blast!! It’s vacation after all!
