So – you have a big trip abroad planned in your future…whether it’s your annual vacay or a trip for work, building in some shopping time is an absolute must! Even though you’ve probably done your fair share of shopping in your home country – going abroad is a whole different ball game. You need to know what you’re after and where to find exactly what you’re looking for. Oh – and understanding the exchange rate definitely helps too. Whatever you do, you’ll want to be happy with your purchases – because you probably won’t be back to deal with a return anytime soon. Here’s a look at everything you need to know about shopping abroad – from the actual process to squeezing all your goodies in your suitcase!
1. Be Prepared. This part is huge. Think ahead about exactly what you’d like to purchase while you’re traveling – what you can’t get at home is probably the best place to start. Be ready to go with an extra bag folded in your suitcase and don’t forget to download a translation app to make your shopping experience super smooth.
2. Get ready. Now remember when you get out there – comfort is key! Leave your clutch at home and go for a solid cross-body that will leave your hands free and ready to carry all your purchases. Have enough cash on hand – just in case there are issues with your credit card (you never know!). Be sure wear an extra layer and comfy shoes; also bring along a copy of your passport (just in case) and perhaps even a city map.
3. Have a plan. You know what shops you want to hit and you know exactly what you’re looking for – don’t miss out by not having a plan. Also get a handle on public transportation or your walking route, if that’s what you’re planning on. Getting lost is definitely not part of the plan! Your big shopping day is also perfect for hitting up a couple of local restaurants while you’re out and about. Make sure you factor coffee and lunch breaks into your game plan.
4. Be organized for the trip home. Depending on the luck of your shopping day, you just may need another bag – lucky you – you came prepared with an extra! If you forgot your extra bag at home, consider shipping your purchases – with the cost of airline bag fees these days, you may even save a buck or two by utilizing a shipping service.
5. Have fun! There’s nothing better than shopping abroad – when it comes to hitting all the shops you know you won’t be able to find at home – it’s so much fun. So let yourself enjoy every moment of it.
