If you’re anything like me, you shop first and don’t really think about how those items will fit into your closet. But organization is key in actually getting some use out of the pieces you have in your wardrobe. If you can’t see them, you won’t use them. And that will limit your scope for styling even if you have tons of remarkable items. So, take my advice – get organized and get more mileage out of your clothes. Promise. It’s really easier than you think. Take these tips and tricks watch as you rediscover the fabulous wardrobe that’s been hiding in your closet.

How to Organize Your Closet

  • Use the Same Hangers – You want to keep all your hangers the same size and color for a uniform fit and feel. To group similar items together (like layering tanks) and save space, use a stacking hanger.
  • Organize by Color – Keep your closet color friendly by organizing in similar shades. That way, if you’re looking for a pink top, you can go to that section and see your options rather than hunting it down all throughout.
  • Organize by Style – Once you have your colors in order, organize by style. Take all your tops and organize by sleeveless, short sleeve, long sleeve, etc. This will make it easier to find a particular style. Same for pants and skirts. Organize by varying lengths.
  • Stack Your Shoes – If you have limited space, stacking your shoe boxes will create more ease of storage. Opt for uniform shoe boxes with clear panels to easily view your options when dressing. For even more space, use under-the-bed storage boxes to stash shoes between seasons. You don’t need to keep your snow boots on display if it’s sunny and warm outside.
  • File Your Handbags – File your handbags in size and color order, in a shelf above the clothing rack, if possible. You can also stack your shoes above and leave space below for a shelf to store your bags. A hanging bag organizer is also a fantastic option for easy access.
  • Stash Your Foldables – Don’t lose precious closet space by keeping in casual items that can be folded in a drawer. T-shirts, leggings, and workout clothes can all be stacked neatly without wrinkling or damage.
  • Out with the Old – Keep track of what doesn’t work. Free up some space by doing the hanger test. At the beginning of the season, make sure your hangers all face in the same direction. As you use an item, hang it facing in the opposite direction. Once the season is over, review the hangers that didn’t move and really think about whether you need that item. If a piece hasn’t moved in a year, it’s time to get rid of it and make room for better.

These are just some of the rules that have worked for me. What are some of your favorite organizational tricks?
