What you wear on the outside won’t look good if what you’re wearing underneath doesn’t fit well. Proper bra fit is so important, not just for support and comfort, but for the smooth lines you want beneath your clothes. If you haven’t had a bra fitting in a while, now’s the time to try these tips and measure yourself for accuracy. You should have a fitting any time you gain or lose weight, even if it’s just a few pounds. So get out your measuring tape and get those girls in the right bra!
Proper Bra Fit: How to Get it Right
Always get a bra fitting after any weight gain or loss: Even if it’s just five pounds, weight fluctuations affect the cup and band size you should be wearing. This includes during and after pregnancy. Have a fitting done for the utmost comfort and support, even if you’re only in transition. Your back and shoulders will thank you.
Measure for the band size: Take the tape measure and wrap it around, just under your bust. Don’t suck in your breath. Get comfortable to make sure you get an accurate size. Round up any fractions to the nearest whole number.
Check for gaps in the band: Ask someone to slide a hand up the back of the band, flat against your back. Then have them turn the hand perpendicular to your back. If your band allows for a gap that fits more than 4 fingers, it’s too loose. If it allows for less than 4 fingers, it’s too tight. Four fingers is exactly right.
Measure for the cup size: Be sure to stand up straight and measure at the fullest part of your bust. The measuring tape should not be squeezing or pulling.
Check for gaps in the cups: While wearing your bra, sit down and lean forward. If there are any gaps in your cups, then the size is too big.
Make sure you have comfortable straps: Your bra straps should not be digging into your shoulders or falling off them. If you are seeing red marks and indentations where your straps rest, or if your straps aren’t staying put, then it’s time to get a smaller band size to off-set the support.
Above all else, your bra should provide comfortable support. If you’re not sure about the fit, go have a professional size you up. Life’s too short to wear the wrong bra!
