Tips for Buying Clothes Online

As most of you know, I’m a bit of a poster woman for online shopping. Recently, at MAWC 2015, I shared with the audience how I made my friends return a pair of shoes they got for me at a brick-and-mortar store just so I could buy them on SHOP.COM and get the Cashback (I’m not even kidding!). I know a good deal when I see it and it’s usually on the other side of my computer screen. However, that being said, buying clothes online does take a bit of effort. It’s not just about getting a good deal – it’s about getting the right deal. And in order to do that, a few steps must take place first. Here’s an insider look into shopping for clothes and shoes online like a pro.

7 Tips for Buying Clothes Online Like a Pro

  1. Know your size – Grab a tape measure and pay attention to those size guides for each garment online. Not every store or design runs the same sizing for similar numbers. Look at the chart for guidance and follow directions in order to get your measurements exact and know exactly which size category you fall into. If you’re not comfortable doing it yourself, have a tailor or retail sales pro do it for you. Be sure to keep up to date with your sizes for an accurate fit.
  2. Try it on in person – Want to get the online deal and pricing but need to try it on for peace of mind? Head to the brick-and-mortar version of the online store and try on your choices. It will give you an idea for feel, texture, cut, shape, and construction. It may take a little longer, but at least you’ll be certain of the item you’re purchasing – especially if it’s a high-ticket item.
  3. Know where to buy – Do a little research and be sure you’re getting the lowest price. If you’re buying on SHOP.COM, you can already see which stores sell the item and at what price. If you’re outside the portal, do your research and compare site prices.
  4. Know your designer – Designers tend to fluctuate a bit in terms of sizing. Some run smaller than others, so do a little research and know what to expect. First, check online for reviews from other buyers. Then, check bloggers or vloggers who will do detailed recaps on how these items fit. Lastly, if at all possible, head to a nearby store that carries the item or a similar item by the same designer so you can try it for fit.
  5. Customize it – If your purchase is only available in a larger size, turn to your tailor and have them customize it for you. Need shorter sleeves or a tighter waist? Have a pro take it in and make it fit just right. Proper fit is just as important as exquisite style and careful construction.
  6. Be aware of return policies – Before you commit to a purchase, know your options. Does the online store have a physical counterpart that will accept your return? Will you only be offered store credit? Is return shipping free? Be sure to read the fine print before you’re stuck with something you can’t wear and can’t give back. And always be extra careful not to damage an item while trying it on to ensure it’s in mint condition in case of a return.
  7. Always check for deals – Lastly, always, always check for promo codes and coupons before checking out. Sites like Retail Me Not and Coupons.com will usually have codes listed for deals like free shipping or a percentage off. Be sure to check before paying more than you have to.
